Crisis in the Caucasus - 2008
The Russian / Georgian Conflict as its Impact on Azerbaijan

Opinions Worth Considering....

Thomas Goltz

Thomas Goltz is an adjunct professor of Political Science at Montana State University, Bozeman in the U.S. He has had close ties in the Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991. He is known for three books often referred to as the Caucasus Trilogy: Azerbaijan Diary (1998), Chechnya Diary (2003), and Georgian Diary (2006).

Goltz knows the terrain along the pipeline of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (pronounced Jeyhan) well, having led three expeditions of sidecar motorcycles (2000, 2001 and 2002) the full length of the pipeline (more than 1,000 miles) across Azerbaijan and Georgia to the Mediterranean port in Turkey. He has frequently contributed articles to Azerbaijan International. Search GOLTZ on home page of AZER.com.

When the fighting started in Ossetia, Goltz hopped on a plane and headed for Tbilisi. Goltz presses the point in his Diary series: "War is hell! War is for real! It ain't a joke!" And the crisis taking place in the Caucasus these days has Goltz as concerned as he has ever been in his journalistic career.

Goltz is fluent in Turkish and Azeri and "street Russian". He lives in Livingston, Montana, when he isn't traveling through Turkey and the Caucasus. Contact: goltz2@superonline.com
