The earliest wave of Azerbaijani refugees fled Armenia in 1988. Then "ethnic cleansing" started in Nagorno-Karabakh around 1992. People fled bordering regions mostly in 1993, and a cease-fire was signed in May 1994. Currently 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory is under military occupation by Armenians. An estimated 1 million Azerbaijanis have been driven from their homes as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Photos 1993.
