Issues
of Law
I'm
a law student at the University of Florida, Levin College of
Law in Gainesville. This spring I carried out major research
for the Florida Journal of International Law on the Status of
the Caspian. My topic dealt with the conflict over the biological
definition of the Caspian and the difficulties caused with its
demarcation and designation of oil rights.
I'm writing to tell you that the help from Azerbaijan International
magazine was immeasurable, and that my research and subsequent
article led to my being selected into membership of the Florida
Journal of International Law. This is a select group of six students
chosen each year to form a consultant journalistic team out of
about 20 applications. We'll be continuing our responsibilities
for the next two years.
As a member of the Journal, I am required to conduct research
and submit further articles, so I hope to write more about Azerbaijan
in the future. I have developed a great interest in this country
through my research. I had no idea of the technological advancements
that have been made by the Azerbaijani people. It is so unfortunate
for our children that history is written with so much Western
bias.
For my next article, I would like to explore legal issues related
to the U.S. Congressional sanctions [Section 907 of the Freedom
Support Act, which prevents the U.S. government from giving aid
directly to the Azerbaijani government].
Before entering law school, I was in the military and learned
Russian from some very wonderful native Russians, who instilled
in me a great interest in this region. I look forward to reading
more from your Web site - AZER.com - for my own personal enjoyment. Thanks
for such a wonderful magazine and for making all the articles
accessible on the Web.
