Research Award Fellowships at Case Western
Dr. Gumrah Aliyev has also been instrumental
in raising funds to enable Azerbaijani medical students to study
at Case Western Reserve University. The first fellowship has
just been awarded for Dr. Dilara Seyidova to begin a two-year
assignment as a Research Associate at the University in July
2002.
Dr. Dilara Seyidova
Seyidova is a graduate of Baku Medical University (1988) in the
field of pediatrics, in which she did research on the rehabilitation
of children who were victims of paralysis or vegetative disorders.
While working with humanitarian organizations in Azerbaijan -
Relief International and UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on
Refugees) - she realized that no one was doing anything about
the chronic neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases in
the elderly population in Azerbaijan. That's when she began to
explore the possibility of changing her specialty from pediatrics
to geriatrics.
In 2000 and 2001, she worked as a Research Associate with Dr.
Aliyev at Case Western Reserve University, studying the brain
and how it is affected by aging and Alzheimer's disease. She
will return there in July 2002. Seyidova has co-authored more
than 12 scientific papers and 10 scientific abstracts for international
journals. In July 2002, she will present her research at the
International Congress of Alzheimer's Disease held in Stockholm,
Sweden.
