2002 Report
The 2002 Azerbaijan Human Development Report is
now available from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
According to the 2002 report, Azerbaijan has moved up to 79th
place (out of 162 countries) in the Human Development Index (HDI);
in 1999, it was in 110th place. The HDI scale measures the human
development of a country in terms of life expectancy, per-capita
income and literacy rates.
Azerbaijan's HDI declined between 1992 and 1995, but has been
rising ever since 1996. In the industrial and agricultural sectors,
Azerbaijan has seen sustainable economic growth since 1996 and
1998, respectively. The report also noted certain shortcomings,
such as the difference in HDI between rural and urban areas and
Azerbaijan's high level of poverty, which is directly related
to its large number of refugees and internally displaced people.
