This
is a landmark statue to the memory of Nizami from Ganjavi (1141-1209),
the "Poet of poets" for Azerbaijanis. He is especially
remembered for writing the dramatic poems, "Seven Beauties"
and "Leyli and Majnun" many of which have been set
to music by Azerbaijani composers. Nizami wrote in Persian, the
literary language of the day, but he was from the ancient city
of Ganja, which is located in northwestern Azerbaijan. The statue
was erected during the Soviet period and the square takes his
name as well, Nizami Square (Nizami Meydani). Back to Ali
