Western
University Building was a residence belonging to Mirzabeyov.
Built in the Renaissance style incorporating elements of Classical
style, this home was under construction from 1911 to 1915.
When the owner realized that World War I was dragging on too
long and the political situation was becoming more and more difficult,
he sold his home to Baku's wealthiest Oil Baron Musa Naghiyev
for 1,200,000 gold rubles. Mirzabeyov then transferred the money
to American banks and moved there himself.
Today, Western
University is revered as one of the most respected private
educational institutions in Baku. Established in 1990 on the
eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the founders
sought to create an institute to offer youth an education that
would equip them to meet some of the new challenges of Azerbaijan's
independence (starting late 1991). Much of the instruction is
in English.
