UCLA - New Azerbaijani Language Course
The
Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA (University
of California at Los Angeles) is offering a new course-Elementary
Azerbaijani-for Fall Quarter 2004, beginning September 30 and
continuing for 10 weeks. In the past, UCLA only offered Azerbaijani
during the summer.
Azerbaijani is the principal Turkic language of the Caucasus
region and the official language of more than 8 million people
of the Republic of Azerbaijan. More than 30 million native speakers
also live in Iran and Turkey. The course will be based on the
official Latin script of the Republic of Azerbaijan although
students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the
old Cyrillic alphabet that was used during the Soviet period
(1920-1991).
This 50-hour course offers four units of credit and introduces
students to the fundamental features of Azerbaijani phonology,
morphology, and syntax. Grammatical competence at elementary
level; knowledge of basic principles of Azerbaijani grammar;
basic conversational skill; reading competence with the help
of dictionary; and ability to write simple compositions.
The instructor for the course is Dr. Kurtulush Oztopchu, author
of Elementary Azerbaijani, the only major grammar text that exists
in English for the Azerbaijani language.
