Stealing the Show - Kasimova Sisters
I wanted to comment about the recent performance of the Kasimova sisters-Fidan and Khuraman-whom we helped sponsor at the annual Gala of Toledo's Opera on February 14, 1998.Over 1500 Americans attended this event. As you can imagine their performance was riveting, especially when they sang "Shohratim Sansin Azerbaijan" ["You Are My Fame, Azerbaijan"]. They also sang selections from "La Tosca" and "Turandot" by Puccini and from "Aida" by Verdi. The audience, so enamored with this trio's talents (including the accompaniment of pianist Farhad Badalbeyli,) gave them a standing ovation. Their overall presence was an immense success. I personally have never witnessed such a profound interest in Azerbaijan or its people here in the U.S.
The Toledo Blade critiqued the performance of this annual event featuring six opera singers and concluded that "Azerbaijani sopranos Khuraman and Fidan Kasimova stole the show." Their extraordinary talent served to create an awareness of Azerbaijan and its people that has never been felt here before. It underscored the fact that talent abounds in Azerbaijan.
